Travel Korea, Travel Seoul, Gyeongbokgung Palace (Info. Ticket & Hanbok)
DoAaa 2023. 8. 15. 23:37Gyeongbokgung Palace was the first legal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. It is located in the north, leaning against Bukhaksan Mountain, and in front of the main gate, Gwanghwamun, a wide Yukjo Street (now Sejong-ro) stretches out, making it the center of the urban planning of Hanyang (Seoul), the royal capital. It was founded by Taejo King Seonggye in 1395, burned down during the Imjin War in 1592, and rebuilt in 1867 during the reign of King Gojong. Led by Heungseon Daewon-gun, the middle-period Gyeongbokgung Palace was a maze of 500 buildings.
Inside the palace were governmental facilities for the king and his officials, living quarters for royalty, and patronage spaces for relaxation. It was also a complex of smaller palaces, including the queen's Junggung Palace, the czar's Donggung Palace, and Gojong's Geoncheonggung Palace. However, during the Japanese occupation, most of the buildings were demolished, leaving only a few central buildings, such as Geunjeongjeon, and the Joseon Governor's Office, which overshadowed the palace itself. Fortunately, since 1990, a full-scale restoration project has been underway, demolishing the governor's building and restoring the Heungnyemun section of the palace, as well as reconstructing the residences of kings and queens, Donggung Palace, Geoncheonggung Palace, and Taewonjeon.
The central part connecting Gwanghwamun, Heungneungmun, Geunjeongmun, Geunjeongjeon, Sagajeon, Gangnyeongjeon, and Gyotaejeon is the core space of the palace and was built symmetrically according to the geometric order. However, except for the center, the buildings are arranged asymmetrically, creating the beauty of change and unity. Gyeongbokgung Palace, the center of the capital city of Seoul and the greatest palace of the Joseon Dynasty, is a place where you can feel the essence of the royal culture with dignity and grace.
Gyeongbokgung Palace: Gyeongbokgung Palace was completed three years after the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. A few days after its completion, the founder of the country, King Jeongdo, named the palace Gyeongbokgung according to the name of King Taejo, as well as the names of the main halls: Gangnyeongjeon, Gyotaejeon, Yeonsaengjeon, Gyeongseongjeon, Sasangjeon, and Geunjeongjeon. The name Gyeongbokgung means "the new dynasty will enjoy great blessings and prosper.
