TWICE's Momo appeared as a Japanese quartet on Superstar K Season 3, which aired in 2011, but failed to make an impact and was eliminated early on. Later, a YouTube video of her performing with her sister (Hana Hirai) caught the eye of a JYP representative and she was invited to audition, which she did, with her sister failing and Momo passing the audition on her own. She's accepted and becomes a trainee, and then appears on JYP's own survival program, SIXTEEN, where she competes against Natty. In the end, however, both Natty and Momo are eliminated. However, JYP's president, Park Jin-young, makes a surprise announcement. He announces Momo as an additional member of TWICE because they needed an additional member who could dance, and because she had consistently shown enough sincerity to be recognized by everyone at JYP at the time.

 

The positions of TWICE's momos are sub vocalist, rapper, and main dancer. In SIXTEEN, Park Jin Young said, "We selected Momo (as an additional member) to strengthen our dancing and performance." What he meant by this is that although everyone in TWICE is a good dancer, they needed someone to be in charge of dancing, and Momo was the right person. 

There's a reason why Park Jin Young raved about Momo's dancing skills. He said that among the students taught by choreographer Kim Hye-rang (the choreographer of ALI, Girls' Generation, Lee Hyo-ri, 2NE1, and Son Dam-bi at YP A&R), Momo is the one with the best dance moves. It is said that Momo's body is naturally long and flexible, so her dance lines are beautiful, and she is flexible and shows her best when she performs powerful dances. However, there are many fans who are disappointed that none of TWICE's choreography is ideal for Momo, so there is a limit to her ability to show her best dance moves.
